The university library of the Düsseldorf University of Applied Sciences is a central operating unit of the Düsseldorf University of Applied Sciences . It is a publicly accessible, academic library without an archive function.

history

With the establishment of the Düsseldorf University of Applied Sciences in 1971, in which the predecessor institutions, Werkkunstschule Düsseldorf, State Engineering School for Mechanical Engineering Düsseldorf, Technical School for Social Work of the Workers 'Welfare, Technical School for Social Work of the Rhineland Regional Association, Higher Technical School for Social Pedagogy of the Workers' Welfare and Düsseldorf Department of the Higher Business School Mönchengladbach combined was accompanied by the establishment of the university library of the Düsseldorf University of Applied Sciences.

The university library was one of the first scientific libraries to use RFID technology for the entire inventory of media.

In the course of renaming the Düsseldorf University of Applied Sciences to Düsseldorf University of Applied Sciences on May 1, 2015, the university library of the Düsseldorf University of Applied Sciences was also renamed the University Library of the Düsseldorf University of Applied Sciences.

With the completion of the new building for the Düsseldorf University of Applied Sciences on the Derendorf campus, the former site of the Düsseldorf slaughterhouse and cattle yard , the library moved into the listed old cattle hall. After all departments moved to Derendorf , all media collections and services of the university library were brought together here.

Location

The university library is located on the Derendorf campus at Münsterstrasse 156. It offers media holdings for the fields of architecture , design , electrical and information technology , mechanical and process engineering , media , social and cultural sciences and economics . The library administration with the library management as well as the departments media processing, media usage and information and digital services are located in this building.

Service and offer

Provision of media and information

The university library offers access to around 150,000 printed books and around 350,000 e-books . It continuously subscribes to around 400 printed journals . There is access to more than 18,200 electronic journals from the university network. Both current journals and archives are included. Around 130 specialist databases are currently licensed for all specialist areas .

To support location-independent learning, the library offers a range of e-learning options, e.g. B. Online video training , language learning opportunities and online courses.

The university library is a standards information point .

With a valid library card, media can be borrowed during opening hours. The library is equipped with self- checkout terminals where media can be borrowed and returned.

Imparting information literacy

The university library offers various introductions and training courses: library introductions, training courses on literature research in the catalog , in the digital library and in specialist databases , introductions to the literature management program Citavi or Zotero and information events on academic work in cooperation with the departments.

The library has an information office with contact persons for questions relating to information and literature procurement. Via DigiAuskunft , the university library is also available for answering questions about information regardless of location and time.

The reading room is equipped with PC workstations where database and literature research can be carried out. There are also printing and copying options. A book scanner is available for free use. There are also group work rooms and study cubicles for learning.

The university library is represented on Facebook and Instagram.

In cooperation with the Media Department, the library is involved in the publication of the electronic open access journal Journal of Virtual Reality and Broadcasting, with a focus on virtual reality and studio technology.

Since 2000, the library has organized regular exhibitions on current topics such as: B. as part of Japan Week 2011 or to take over the Karl-Heinz Krug study library.

There is also a cooperation with the regional libraries in Düsseldorf: the holdings of the university library can also be searched using the regional Düsselbib catalog. With HSDopus, the library offers a university publication server for institutional publications.

Special stocks

The university library has various special collections: thanks to the mediation of the design department of the Düsseldorf University of Applied Sciences, the university library received a donation from the estate of Karl-Heinz Krug in 2011. The Karl-Heinz Krug study library comprises around 1,500 volumes from the estate of the long-time editor-in-chief of the renowned design magazine form .

The library has a comprehensive inventory of publications by and about Peter Behrens in a special display case.
