Road traffic in Ludwigshafen am Rhein

Elevated streets

Hochstraße Nord to the Kurt-Schumacher-Brücke : The red nets should protect against falling concrete parts.

As part of the urban development project Business Card from the 1950s, the " Hochstraße Nord" from the Bruchwiesenk Junction on the federal motorway 650 between Valentin-Bauer-Siedlung and Hochschule zur Kurt-Schumacher-Brücke (Mannheim) as well as the “Hochstraße Süd” from Bruchwiesenk Junction to Konrad Adenauer Bridge . Both elevated roads together are used by more than 100,000 vehicles every day.

Hochstrasse north

The 1.8 km long Hochstraße Nord was built from 1970 to 1981. The construction cost 135 million marks, of which the federal government and the state bore around 80% of the costs. It was originally intended for city traffic between Hemshof / BASF and Hochstraße Süd and instead of to Bruchwiesenstraße it was supposed to lead over Heinigstraße to the southwest junction on Hochstraße Süd.

As on Hochstraße Süd, there are also considerable structural defects on Hochstraße Nord that impair the stability. For this reason, for example, in 2010 the bridge over Rheinuferstraße was completely closed for vehicles with a width of more than 2.0 m, and in 2013 the Heinigstraße exit, which leads to the main train station, from the direction of Mannheim. Many parts of the bridge structure are surrounded with nets to protect against damage in the event of falling concrete parts, or the areas below are blocked.

The north elevated road is to be replaced by a street at ground level. For this purpose, the plan approval procedure was initiated on August 22, 2018. Construction work is scheduled to begin at the end of 2021 and is expected to take eight years.

Hochstrasse south

The Hochstraße Süd begins at the Rhine foreland bridge adjacent to the Konrad-Adenauer-Brücke, which was rebuilt in 2003, and consists of

  • the "Pilzhochstraße" to about the level of the Schützenstraße,
  • the "Weißen Hochstraße" to the ZOB and
  • the "Hochstraße West" with the pylon bridge over the main station.

The Pilzhochstraße was opened in 1959, the remaining parts not until 1968. Between Weißer Hochstraße and Hochstraße West, the “southwest junction” was originally planned as a connection to the Hochstraße Nord planned at that time over Heinigstraße. By relocating the main station, the entrances and exits to the west were built further west in Lorientallee and Kaiser-Wilhelm-Straße. Initially, a crossing-free extension was planned in Heinigstrasse, which can still be guessed at the course of the descent from Mannheim with the arch in the direction of the wasteland (on which the new police headquarters will be built from the end of 2020).

The approximately 500 m long mushroom high road consists of 10 sub-structures, each of which stands on two or three individual supports called “mushrooms”. From 1985 to 1988 concrete repairs took place on the Pilzhochstraße. In May 2016, rust was discovered in the reinforced concrete structure. Static deficits were found here in the late summer of 2017 , which is why a driving ban for trucks was set up there in autumn 2017, which most recently resulted in a ban on multi-lane vehicles with a mass of 3.5 t or more and vehicles with a width of more than 2, 1 m had been widened. On August 22, 2019, the monthly examinations in Pilz revealed 12 cracks that had widened to up to 1.5 mm since the previous month, whereupon the Pilzhochstrasse and the areas on the dam road below the affected area were completely closed. Investigations in the following weeks revealed further changes in cracks on mushrooms 10, 11 and 13. On September 24th, the appraiser discussed the first interim results with the city's engineers and a “limit assessment of the actual load transfer taking into account the actual extent of damage” is to be carried out. As things stand, the Pilzhochstrasse must remain closed until at least the end of 2023; The city administration expects to be able to present to the city council possible variants with which the bridge could be used to demolish the Hochstraße Nord - for example, temporary supports, temporary bridges or a new construction at short notice - at the latest by the beginning of December 2019 [out of date] .

Demolition of the mushroom high road

On November 22, 2019, new calculations showed that it is not certain whether the bridge construction of the Pilzhochstrasse can continue to bear its own weight. The elevated road and some of the roads that crossed it were then completely closed. After the Pilzhochstraße had been provided with temporary supports made of tree trunks, steel and concrete, the partial demolition began on June 11, 2020.

According to the original planning specifications, the measures to renovate Hochstraße Süd should have been implemented before Hochstraße Nord was demolished, but this was not feasible. Accordingly, Hochstraße Süd could only have been refurbished after the work on Hochstraße Nord was completed, as it is intended as a diversion route for this, i.e. in 2027 at the earliest.

Regional and long-distance transport

Supraregional motorway network

Main roads (at least four lanes) in and around Mannheim

The A 61 on the left bank of the Rhine (Cologne - Koblenz - Ludwigshafen - Hockenheim triangle) runs to the west and south, and the A 6 (Saarbrücken - Mannheim - Heilbronn - Nuremberg) to the north and east of Mannheim . Together with the A 67 in the direction of Frankfurt, they establish national connections in all directions.

Ludwigshafen-Mannheim motorway ring

The A 6 and A 61 motorways surround Ludwigshafen in the north and west. In the south and east, running away from the city, they together form an outer motorway ring around Ludwigshafen and Mannheim.

The completion of a narrower motorway ring in the south has not yet been realized. A connection of the B 9 at Ludwigshafen-Rheingönheim over the Rhine to the Rhein-Neckar-Schnellweg (B 38a) fails because of the nature reserve Altrheinaue at Altrip . A long tunnel was discussed as a way out, but it is currently not affordable.

Connections to Ludwigshafen

West bypass: As a western bypass close to the city, the motorway-like B 9 connects to the A 6 (AS Ludwigshafen-Nord ) and to Worms in the north, and to the south to the A 61 (AS Kreuz Speyer ) and to Speyer .

Branch autobahns in the west: The two radial branch autobahns A 650 and A 65 connect Ludwigshafen city center to the A 61 autobahn. The A 65 runs from the B 9 in the south of Ludwigshafen in a southeastern direction, it crosses the A 61 at the Mutterstadt junction and continues to Neustadt and Landau . The A 650 runs from Ludwigshafen city center west to Bad Dürkheim , where it meets the A 61 at the Ludwigshafen junction .

In the east / Mannheim: Ludwigshafen can only be reached from the east via the Mannheim city area. From the northeast the route leads over the B 38 to Mannheim and on over the Kurt-Schumacher-Brücke to the center of Ludwigshafen, from the southeast over the A 656 or B 36 to Mannheim and on over the Konrad-Adenauer-Brücke .

Areas at risk of congestion

In the motorway network, the four-lane A 61 between the crosses Frankenthal and Mutterstadt is particularly heavily used by trucks. An expansion is in the "priority need" of the federal transport route plan .
