The floods in Ghana in 2015 mainly affected the Ghanaian capital Accra and its immediate vicinity and began on June 1, 2015 with heavy rain. The flood, which lasted for a few days, claimed 25 deaths directly from the flood, as well as up to 200 more deaths from an explosion caused by the flood and subsequent fire at a gas station, under which people sometimes wanted to protect themselves from the flood with their vehicles. A total of 36,000 residents of the capital were affected by the floods.

Procedure and effects

After heavy rains that lasted several hours around the capital Accra from June 1, 2015, the slowly rising water led to heavy traffic at the beginning, which almost completely subsided after the water continued to rise and made it almost impossible to get any further. Among other things, the Kaneshie market in the suburb of Kaneshie and its surroundings was flooded. Furthermore, from June 3rd, the day on which the most precipitation fell, Graphic Road, where numerous international car dealerships are located, was also affected by the flooding, with the Toyota Ghana and Rana Motors showrooms completely under water stood, which meant millions in damages.

A flood- related explosion at a GOIL filling station opposite the Ghana Commercial Bank Tower near the Kwame Nkrumah Interchange in Accra's city center was more serious. At that time, several hundred people, some with their vehicles, were looking for protection from the masses of water; Shortly before the explosion, eyewitnesses noticed a film of fuel and oil on the surface of the water. This ignited when it hit a fire in an adjacent building. According to various reports, at least 73 to 200 people died in the explosion and the subsequent fire, which spread from the gas station to other adjacent buildings, including a pharmacy, offices and residential buildings. Many of the fatalities, as well as the injured, were taken to 37 Military Hospital , whose officials soon reported that the morgue was full, with bodies lying on the street the next day. The Mayor of Accras, Alfred Vanderpuije , the parliamentarian Nii Armah Ashitey , and the Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama met at the scene of the accident on June 4th .

Reactions

On the same day, President Mahama announced that at least 150 people had been killed, the highest number in Ghana's history since the 2001 Accra Sports Stadium panic . Furthermore, on June 4, Mahama ordered a three-day state mourning beginning on June 8; Communications Minister Edward Omane Boamah and Home Secretary Mark Woyongo spoke of a national disaster.

On June 5, Cardinal Secretary of State Pietro Cardinal Parolin sent a telegram on behalf of Pope Francis to the Right Reverend Joseph Osei-Bonsu , President of the Ghanaian Bishops' Conference , in which condolences were expressed.

The government of President Mahama released a sum of GH ₵ 60 million in Flagstaff House to support the victims and the bereaved.

Many Ghanaian personalities such as the soccer players Asamoah Gyan , Kevin-Prince Boateng and the Black Stars paid tribute to the victims of the disaster. Furthermore, a football and educational event and concert among others on 1 August 2015 Mandela Park of Ashaiman organized at which, among others, this year's BET Award winners Stonebwoy and other local artists and athletes such as former national soccer player Stephen Appiah , the Miss Ghana Tourism 2014 Belvy Naa Teide Ofori , the singer Kalybos (nee Richard Asante), the singer Ecstasy , as well as numerous other Ghanaian personalities took part.
