The Christental flood retention basin is located in the Göppingen district in Baden-Württemberg and - like the Herrenbach and Simonsbach flood retention basins - is operated by the Fils water association. The dammed Schwarzwiesenbach is a tributary of the Lauter in the Fils catchment area .
The Christental is located in the Stauferland near Lauterstein north of the Nenningen district; it was supposedly named after a fictional battle between pagans and Christians that has been localized here since around 1800 - following a fiction by chronicler Thomas Lirer .
The Schwarzwiesenbach in Christental has an average of 20 liters of water per second. The flood retention basin was built in 1978/79 to protect against flooding . The reservoir is a worthwhile destination for hiking and recreation in the middle of a nature reserve .
The 18 m high and 220 m long dam was built from soil material. The size of the storage space is 262,000 cubic meters; in another source the flood protection area is given as 168,000 cubic meters.
