The Wental flood retention basin is a flood retention basin near Steinheim am Albuch in Baden-Württemberg . It was built in 1958 with a 17 meter high dam as a barrier and is operated by the Wedel-Brenz water association.
It is named after the Wental , a dry valley in the north-eastern Swabian Alb , the lower part of which the dam crosses. 150 million years ago a branch of the watercourse flowed in the Wental, which is now called Wedel or Wentel on the lower reaches and flows into the Brenz in Heidenheim . When the former Jurassic Sea withdrew, the Alb karstified, and since then the precipitation has almost always completely seeped into the karst .
In the case of very rare heavy rains, however, significant amounts of water could flow away, which could even reach the city center of nearby Heidenheim through Steinheim. Such outflows are caught or at least reduced by the retention basin.
