Tom and his friends, from left: mother, the crocodile, three bees, the strawberry mouse, Tom and the miller and his pig

The hero of the five-minute films is Tom, who is always on the lookout for a strawberry jam bread with honey and almost always ends up with exactly half a loaf of bread that "tastes as good as if it were a whole". During his searches, Tom regularly meets various friends. Most often appear:

  • the miller, Tom's old friend, from whom he usually gets flour for his bread. His pet is a magical pig that helps him with work,
  • his mother, from whom he gets "delicious well water" for baking bread,
  • the strawberry mouse, proud and rather stingy owner of a large strawberry field,
  • the crocodile, it is the friend of the strawberry mouse and "internationally recognized strawberry squeezer", "internationally recognized abdominal trainer", "internationally recognized crocodile washer", "internationally recognized screwdriver" and so on,
  • three bees, mostly in a bad mood, but now and then Tom can talk them out of some honey.

Now and then, Tom also meets:

  • the poor little girl who every now and then takes half a loaf of bread from Tom, but also helps him out with helpful ideas,
  • the nice man who always speaks in rhymes and is a real rascal; his goal is always to steal Tom's bread. He and the rest of the "nice family" are the only people who have a nose
  • the doctor who lives in a box and jumps out when you insert a coin,
  • the frogs, loud-mouthed places of worship that have swallowed Tom and twisted everything. They are called Limbo, Punkto, Streipo, Grungo, Bongo, Schrumpfo, Flip, Flap and Flop,
  • three fireflies from the forest that sing and light up the way for Tom. Every firefly feels lonely and alone
  • Mine and Mona, the Motzer. The two bats are always bored and say Tom is stupid.
  • His father, who often goes fishing.

style

Tom films are based on hand drawings that are traced with Flash software and then animated with the computer.

The language of images and forms in the films is simple: the representation of the environment is two-dimensional , comparable to a comic . Also coming thought bubbles with symbolic content for use. All surfaces are monochrome and colored without gradients. The figures and objects are also designed two-dimensionally, with simplified bodies, the extremities of which, for example in Tom, are only drawn with simple lines. Most of the characters have no nose and no fingers .

The films always have something in common, for example almost every film begins with the introduction “One day Tom thought of a delicious strawberry jam sandwich with honey. He went for a walk, but he couldn't get the strawberry jam bread with honey out of his head ”. Then his search always begins with the miller. As already mentioned, at the end of the search, Tom only has half a strawberry jam bread with honey, but that doesn't make it any less tasty. When a person has given Tom a hint for his next ingredient, Tom cheers: "Tom thought it was a wonderful idea". He always ends his day where he got the last ingredient for his bread (a meadow of flowers, the roof of his mother's house ...) and is “perfectly happy”, which is symbolized by an empty thought bubble.

Gestures and body language in Tom and the other protagonists are repeated in every episode. For example, the miller is always greeted and bid farewell with the same high five , which is always shown from the same perspective. Noises and music are also specific at all locations and are retained in all episodes, although variations are possible. In the German-language dubbing, Dirk Bach spoke the narrator and all characters in the films with different voices and intonations.

Charisma

Tom and the strawberry jam bread with honey runs both as an independent series on KI.KA every Sunday at 10:25 am, Das Erste and on SWR television and as an episode in the show with the mouse . The TV episodes are accompanied by two interactive online films and small games for each double episode. In addition, viewers can choose their favorite episode every week, which is also shown on the Internet.

reception

“It's also noteworthy that Tom's films have had a permanent place on television for four years, but were born on the Internet. Here, as before, the interactive films show the particular strengths of the web as a medium - and at the same time convey the children initial knowledge of interactive media use "
