Hoedspruit ( Afrikaans for 'hat river') is a city in the Limpopo province of South Africa . It is located at the foot of the Little Drakensberg, the northern foothills of the Drakensberg , and on the railway line from Mbombela to Louis Trichardt . The Pride of Africa luxury train stops there. Hoedspruit is at an altitude of 533 meters above sea level.

The site has grown steadily in recent years due to its proximity to some private game reserves east of Kruger National Park . Hoedspruit has a military airfield , but civil aviation is also permitted there. The IATA code is HDS. While the space shuttle was in operation, this was a possible emergency landing site in the event of an unscheduled landing.
