Hofbräu art mill

The Hofbräuhaus-Kunstmühle is the only still active grain mill in Munich . It is registered as an architectural monument in the Bavarian list of monuments.

location

The mill is located in the Graggenau quarter of Munich's old town at Neuturmstraße 3. It borders the area to the east on which the Hofbräuhaus am Platzl is located.

history

It is not known when a mill was first built at this point. A mill already exists on Jakob Sandtner's wooden city model of Munich from 1570 .

The immediate predecessor of today's mill was built in 1703 by Elector Maximilian II. Emanuel as a malt mill for the neighboring Hofbräuhaus am Platzl , which was moved from the Altes Hof to its current location on Platzl in 1607 . On the city map of the Topographic Office from 1806, it extends on the west bank of the Malzmühlbach from the confluence of Germbach and Einüttbach to the Kosttor .

In the 1870s the Royal Malt Mill was sold to private. The old building was replaced with a new one and the mill was converted into a modern flour mill. Eight roller mills were used instead of the old grinding mills . Due to the modern technology, the mill was now allowed to use the designation art mill .

The Hofbräuhaus-Kunstmühle has been owned by the Blum family since 1921, and Stefan Blum took over the business in 2001 . The mill survived the Second World War without major damage.

The Malzmühlbach flowed under the mill until 1967. When it was shut down due to the construction of the subway , the mill wheel was dismantled and the power supply to the mill was switched to electricity. In 1988 a small shop was set up on the ground floor, where the mill products are sold to end users.

After the Kraemer'sche Kunstmühle ceased operations in August 2007, the Hofbräuhaus-Kunstmühle is the last mill to be produced in Munich. From 27 tons of wheat, 22 tons of wheat flour are produced daily .
