The Hoffmann Pfeifhase ( Ochotona hoffmanni ) is a species of mammal from the family of the Pfeifhasen (Ochotonidae) within the hare-like (Lagomorpha). Their distribution area includes only two mountain regions in Mongolia and Russia .

The Hoffmann Pfeifhase is only known from two mountain ranges in Mongolia and Russia . In Mongolia it is the Hentiyn-Nuruu mountain range of the Bayan-Ulan Mountains ( Chentii Mountains ), in Russia it is the Erman Mountains in the Jablonowy Mountains in the Chita Oblast in the Mongolian-Russian border area. The total area of ​​the distribution area is about 600 square kilometers.

Systematics

The Hoffmann Pfeifhase is assigned as an independent species to the Pfeifhasen (genus Ochotona ) and the subgenus Pika , subspecies are not known. When it was first described in 1996, the taxon was regarded as a subspecies of the Altai pigeon hare ( Ochotona alpina ), but recognized in 1999 as a separate species due to its morphological features and features of bioacoustics and the genome .

Hazard and protection

The species is classified as threatened (endangered) by the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN) due to its very small distribution area. The effects of global warming are seen as a threat to the population , as the species is sensitive to changes in temperature and there is no possibility of reaching other habitats.
