The Hofkonditorei Café Seelos is a historic confectionery in Sigmaringen at Fürst-Wilhelm- Strasse 22.

history

The history of the house on Fürst-Wilhelm-Straße goes back to at least 1572, when the widow Margarethe Roy, b. Happy, lived there. Over the centuries it changed hands several times. The Seelos family came to Sigmaringen around 1720 with the princely body coach Andreas Seelos from Sonthofen . On May 12, 1864, Albert Seelos († 1914) took over the house at Fürst-Wilhelm-Straße 22 from the court chef Josef Wiedlinger. When Albert Seelos opened his pastry shop in 1864, Sigmaringen had 2,600 inhabitants. In addition to the pastry shop, Albert Seelos also had a specialty shop and built a small café next to the shop, which soon got a good reputation. In 1900 he handed the business over to his son Alois. Prince Leopold von Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen confirmed the title of purveyor to the court again. The wording of the deed of May 18, 1900 reads:

"We Leopold, Prince of Hohenzollern by the grace of God, have been graciously moved to transfer the title awarded to the pastry chef Albert Seelos as Princely Court Confectioner to his son and business successor Alois Seelos and to have a certificate currently issued."

It is unclear when exactly Albert Seelos received the title. Prince Friedrich von Hohenzollern- Sigmaringen approved the successor to carry on the title.

In the course of time, Seelos gave up the specialty business, but continued to expand the confectionery, with his wife Helene, daughter of the Sigmaringen master butcher Alois Raminger, supporting him. After the inflation from 1914 to 1923 , the first floor was converted into a café. Since 1939 Alois Seelos junior and his wife Martina geb. Henselmann the business. Her father, originally from Laiz and living in Freiburg , died in World War II . In 1953 the lower room was enlarged again and the exterior renovated.

The pastry shop was eventually given up by the Seelos family. The Huthmacher brothers from Sigmaringen have been the operators since 1996. The house has been owned by the Kraiss family since 2009, and the lease for the pastry shop has been extended.

The Café Seelos and the “Semmeringer Fasnet ” were closely linked. The owner was for a long time president of the fools' guild "Vetter Guser", the pastry shop was the traditional hostel of the Elferrat. There is a certificate about the appointment as "hostel father" and the "meeting point sugar room" was known.

The confectionery is a member of the state guild of the confectionery trade in Baden-Württemberg Guild Sigmaringen-Zollernalb.
