High latitudes
High latitudes denote the northern third of the northern hemisphere and the southern third of the southern hemisphere on the earth
It is a differently defined term in geography :
- From a geomathematical point of view, this zone lies between the poles and polar circles (66.5 ° N / S) of the earth.
- According to climatology , the term is used synonymously for the polar regions .
- In ecology , however, the boreal coniferous forests (taiga) are also added, so that the high latitudes here include the polar / subpolar and boreal eco - zones (see also: map of eco-zones ) .
The term is transferred analogously in the first sense also used in planetology for other celestial bodies .
