The Hohe Linde heap is a mountain heap (pointed cone heap ) near Sangerhausen that can be seen from afar and comes from the mining of copper slate in the Sangerhausen Mulde.

Emergence

1944 began sinking of Thomas Müntzer Schacht by the Mansfeld AG . After the excavated overburden had only been deposited near the shaft, a 900 m long cable car was built over the Brühltal and the Brühlberg for reasons of space. The cable car was carried by six supports that were 11.6 m to 36 m high. It consisted of the suspension cable car, a gondola transfer station from the cable car to the elevator and the tipping station on the dump. From December 22nd, 1955 to August 10th, 1990, the cable car carried the waste rock onto the dump. The cable car was dismantled in the mid-1990s and the "Hohe Linde" has since become a highly visible monument of the former copper slate mining in Sangerhausen.

Today's appearance

Today the dump is around 150 meters high, so the summit is around 400 m above sea level. NHN. In the approximately 35 years of operation, around 20 million tons of rock have been heaped up on around 13 hectares, mainly Zechstein limestone , anhydrite and Rotliegend . In a small part there is also copper slate seam and rock salt . The ascent is prohibited for safety reasons, but there are guided and approved climbs up to twice a year.

Fossil finds

The heap is rich in fossils. Finds of fossil fish from the Permian period are described , such as copper shale herring , Wodnika striatula , Acentrophorus glaphyrus , Platysomus striatus and Pygopterus humboldti, but also plant remains such as algae, conifers, ferns, gingko plants, horsetail and ribbon trees. The copper slate is also identified as a type of "fish slate".
