Hohenloh

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hohenloh is a newly created district in the northeast of Detmold, approx. 1.5 km from the historic city center. After the withdrawal of the British Army of the Rhine in 1995, the area of the Detmold airfield used by the British was put to civil use.

The site of the former air base, called Hobart Barracks by the British , covers around 109 hectares . There was an airfield with an area of approx. 49 hectares and, corresponding to the earlier use, crew and officer accommodations, administration buildings, aircraft hangars, workshops and social buildings.

After the withdrawal of the British units, it was necessary to build an infrastructure for the new district. New roads were built that make it possible to get directly from Herberhausen to the city center without having to drive around the area. Furthermore, new bus connections were created.

In order to use the area and the buildings of the facility, some of which are under monument protection, a large number of new projects were tackled. Several local companies (Schomburg, WDP and Kiesow) settled there. Various shopping opportunities were also created in the construction and garden sectors, as well as furniture and home furnishings. A food market has also settled there.

In addition to commercial use, the Art Kite Museum was also built there in one of the huge former hangars - but it was closed again in 2005. There is also a depot of the Westphalian Open-Air Museum Detmold on the former air base .

There are numerous schools on the site as well as a center for community psychiatry, which is responsible for basic psychiatric care in the Lippe district.

Plots for the construction of single-family houses are being offered. In addition, a solar settlement is to be built in Hohenloh as part of the 50 solar settlements in North Rhine-Westphalia program .

Events

Up until 2004, a balloon night was held every summer on the airfield.

Hangar 24b was used until 2004 for various events such as B. Abiparties and birthday parties used. Since then, a kind of weekly flea and flea market has arisen there, which now takes place every Wednesday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. and also includes the outdoor area.

Every Wednesday, Sunday and public holiday from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm there is an inline skater meeting in the 3500 m² hall.

In the last few years, a "covered" fair took place in the hangar to end the summer.
