geography

The Hohmad district is located in the center of the Thun municipality, southwest of the old town. In the east it borders the Seefeld , in the southeast on Dürrenast , in the southwest on the Neufeld , in the west on the military area and in the north on the western quarter .

The boundaries of the quarter, as they are defined according to the Quartierleist division and the BFS , are given by the street Frutigenstrasse-Jungfraustrasse-Länggasse-Burgerstrasse-Weststrasse-Talackerstrasse. The quarter is crossed by Hohmadstrasse.

history

The name of the quarter is derived from "high mat". This indicates that the area within the plain, which was threatened by flooding until the diversion of the Kander into Lake Thun in 1714, was slightly elevated and was used for grass farming. Only after 1930 did the development of the residential quarter begin. In 1977 the Zentrum Oberland, a large shopping center with a Migros supermarket, was opened. From the mid-2000s, another residential and commercial complex was built on Fruttigstrasse, the Hohmad Park, with an Aldi Suisse branch, which covers almost the entire neighborhood.
