The Hokkaidōritsu Sōgō Taiiku Center ( Japanese 北海道 立 総 合 体育 セ ン タ ー , ~ Sentā , "General Prefectural Sports Center Hokkaidō", English Hokkaido Prefectural Sports Center ) is a multi-purpose hall in Sapporo , the prefecture capital of Hokkaidō .
History and use
The hall, also known as Hokkai Kitayell ( 北海 き た え ー る , Hokkai Kitaēru ) after the name rights were sold to the educational institution Hokkai Gakuen, was built from 1996 to 1999 and is mainly used for sporting events. Competitions in the disciplines of basketball , athletics , futsal and fitness are held here. In 2006 the building with a capacity of 8,000 (sports) to a maximum of 10,000 seats (concerts) was used for preliminary round matches of the basketball world championship . The sports teams Levanga Hokkaido (basketball) and Espolada Hokkaido (futsal) have been using the sports facility as their home venue since 2007 and 2009.
In 2011, Eric Clapton performed here as part of his Clapton World Tour .
