Holger Danske
Holger Danske (Holger, the Dane) is a Danish legendary hero who was first mentioned in the old French Chanson de geste .
background
Around 800, when the empire of Charlemagne had reached its heyday, the Danish king Gudfred or Godfrid waged a long and successful war against the Franconian expansion to Friesland and Schleswig . After long feuds, peace was made between the two rulers.
According to the legend , Holger was Gudfred's son. In one tradition he had a son who was slain by Charles the Younger , the son of Charlemagne . Holger sought revenge , pursued Charlot, killed him and almost managed to kill Charlot himself. He resisted Charlemagne for seven years and then made peace with him in order to go into the field at his side against the Saracens , where he killed the giant Brehus in battle .
Like Friedrich Barbarossa and King Arthur , according to a Danish legend, Holger was to return; He lived in Kronborg Castle , his beard grew down to the floor and he slept there until the day when Denmark was in great danger. At that time he would rise and lead the nation to freedom. According to another legend, the king sits on the Höljer Danskes, a hill of the Rönneberga backär in Skåne .
