The oldest house in Ameland is in Hollum.

With 1,260 inhabitants, Hollum is the largest town on the West Frisian island of Ameland and is located at its western end. The town center is characterized by old captains 'and seafarers' houses, entire streets are under a kind of monument protection ( Dutch beschermd dorpsgezicht ), including the oldest house in Ameland, which was built in 1615. There are three churches in the small town and there are also numerous holiday homes there and in the vicinity.

Sorgdrager Cultural History Museum

The cultural history museum was opened in 1963. It is named after Pieter Cornelis Sorgdrager, who had the captain's house built in 1751. The exhibition shows everyday objects, furniture and folk art from the 18th century and provides information about the living conditions on the island at that time, about shipping and whaling, which helped many islanders to a certain prosperity. In the meantime, the museum has been expanded to include the neighboring farmhouse.

De Verwachting windmill

Between 1840 and 1949 there was a grain mill in Hollum called De Verwachting , which had to be demolished because it was dilapidated. The successor building from 1991 originally comes from Brucht ( Overijssel ). In addition to grain, mustard is now also ground in the Galerieholländer . At certain times, the production is presented and demonstrated to visitors.

Maritime Center Abraham Fock

The Maritime Center has existed since 2009 and contains a partly interactive exhibition on all aspects of seafaring and sea rescue. The old lighthouse of the lighthouse was added to the building complex. Here is the location of the old motor lifeboat Nicolaas Marius , which after its decommissioning was renamed Abraham Fock (II) , one of the founders of the Dutch sea rescue company . The stable for the 12 draft horses is accessible, as is the replica of a command bridge .

Churches

Church on Herenweg (photo from 1971)

Today's Nederlands Hervormde kerk on the Oosterlaan is the fourth church building that stands at this point. During excavations, indications of previous structures from the 11th, 12th and 13th centuries were found. In 1569 the then still Roman Catholic church was badly damaged by the Watergeuzen . After its restoration in 1678, the building of the church went to the Reformed community. There are many graves of seafarers and whalers in the associated cemetery, including the resting place of Hidde Dirks Kat .

Different faiths have their own meeting rooms on Ameland. There are also two other Protestant churches in Hollum, the towerless buildings of the Doopsgezinde gemeente on Herenweg (built in 1867) and the Gereformeerde kerk (1923) on the Westerlaan. Both churches now belong to the combined Evangelical-Reformed-Mennonite community ( Federatie Doopsgezind-Gereformeerd ).

In the neighborhood

Near the village, in the direction of Westende, is the Ameland lighthouse, 55.3 meters high, with a viewing platform. During the German occupation in World War II, there was an anti-aircraft gun site and several bunkers in the surrounding dune area, which are now buried by the sand. Some buildings of the former military camp were later used as a youth hostel and now belong to the Stayokay - Hostel .

Horse grave

In the horse grave at the Reddingbotpad dune crossing lie eight horses that drowned in 1979 during a rescue operation. A sailing yacht was in distress and the lifeboat was pulled into the waves by eight horses as usual. But this time the wagon got deeper than usual into the water, the horses could not be released from the heavy vehicle in time and were dragged into the depths by it. The crew of the sailing yacht was saved as the lifeboat was not damaged, but the horses were lost. On the initiative of one of the horse owners, the dead animals were not handed over to the skinner after they were recovered, but rather buried in the dunes near the site of the accident.

Traditional events

The boat watering takes place around fourteen times a year, during which the old lifeboat Abraham Fock is driven in a horse-drawn vehicle from the maritime center over the dike on the Tjettepad to the beach. Accompanied by a band, it is pulled into the surf by eight horses and lowered into the water. After a short tour, the boat is pulled back onto the wagon, brought ashore and back to the depot. The sea rescuers are thus remembering their historical roots and using this opportunity to solicit support for their work. Every year in June, a music festival is held on the occasion of Bootwateren, at which shanty choirs and brass bands from all over the country come to Hollum to present live music on various stages in the town center for a day.
