history

Holmens Bruk was originally founded as an arms factory by Johann Herzog von Östergötland , they made armor and drilled muskets and pistol barrels . The factory was on the island of Kvarnholmen (Mill Island) in Norrköping, hence the name Holmen. From 1620 it was headed by the Dutchman Louis De Geer , who among other things founded brass production. In addition to brass, clothing production, milling and fishing were carried out. From 1633, handmade paper was produced, but production stopped again in the 1640s.

In 1719 Norrköping and with it Holmens Bruk was destroyed by the Russian army in the Great Northern War and rebuilt shortly afterwards. The Holmentornet was rebuilt in 1750 and got its current appearance. As the international sale of the brass produced became more difficult at the end of the 18th century, production ended in 1798. Paper production was resumed in 1806 and quickly developed into the most important branch of the company. In the beginning it was still made by hand. In the 1830s, production was mechanized.

In 1854 Holmens Bruk was converted into a Aktiebolag and renamed Holmens Bruks och Fabriks AB . During this time textile production began, which was further expanded in 1926 through the acquisition of Förenade Yllefabrikerna AB (YFA). The expansion of the company began with the construction of the paper mill in Hallstavik ( Uppland ) in 1915. In addition to paper investing in sawmills, Backa-Hosjö AB was bought in 1943 .

In the post-war period, the focus was more and more on the wood and paper sector, in 1970 the last parts of the YFA were shut down. Paper mills were bought and new ones built. With the takeover of Fiskeby AB in 1986, Holmens Bruk entered the packaging industry. In the same year, an era in the company's history ended, the paper mill in central Norrköping was closed after 377 years of uninterrupted production.

In 1988 the company was incorporated into Mo och Domsjö AB through share purchases ; since 2000 the group has been called Holmen AB again .
