Holy Blood is a black / folk metal band from Kiev , Ukraine .
Holy Blood is one of the few Christian folk metal bands. Thematically they deal with the struggle between good and evil as well as spiritual redemption. Most of the lyrics are in Russian , as the band members don't speak Ukrainian . There are also international versions of the albums with English lyrics.
history
Holy Blood was founded in 1999 by Mihail Rodionov, Dmitry Titorenko and Fedor Buzilevich as a metalcore band. However, a year later they changed their style towards Death Metal / Grindcore . In 2001 the band was expanded by three members (Tsesarev, Furman, Knyazyova) and began to play melodic death metal . A year later, the first album Странник (The Wanderer) was recorded and released on a Ukrainian label. In the same year Alexei Furman also left the band and was replaced by Artyom Stupak, and Fedor Buzilevich also began to play the recorder.
In 2003 Sergei Nagorny replaced Rodionov on electric guitar and the songs for the second album Волны танцуют (Waves Are Dancing) were written. With this work, the band turned to folk black metal. Another exit from the band caused Artyom Stupak, who founded his own project Evroklydon. Nagorny took his place as lead guitarist and Buzilevich took over the rhythm guitar. In the same year Buzilevich and Rodionov also recorded the album of the studio project Requital, Retribution for Sin , which contained previously unreleased Holy Blood songs. In the fall of that year, Eugen Tsesarev left the band and Alexei Andrushenko took over the position on the electric bass.
In the following year a contract was signed with the Christian label Bombworks Records, which released or re-released the new album Waves are Dancing , as well as the first work The Wanderer . Vera Knyazyova left the band in September 2005 and was replaced by Vladislav Malitskiy, while Vyacheslav Kirishun, a bagpipe and flute player, joined the band in 2005 , who left the band for unknown reasons in 2006.
In 2008 the old line-up broke up again. Since then, Fedor Buzilevich has continued to run the band alone with changing musicians. In 2010 the album Shining Sun was released , the last work on Bombwork Records . A video was also made for the theme song. In 2014, the last full-length album to date День отмщения ( Day of Vengeance ) was released in a version limited to 500 copies via Musica Production . Her only EP Glory to the Heroes is the most recent sound carrier and was released in 2017 on the American label Vision of God Records .
The band played most of their live appearances in their home country and there mainly in Kiev, although in 2006 a foreign appearance took place in Switzerland at the Elements of Rock .
style
Holy Blood plays folk metal with elements of death and black metal. Their music is characterized by elements of Ukrainian folklore and Celtic music . Both ethnic instruments such as the recorder and bagpipes are used, as well as classical metal instruments. Most of the singing is guttural and can be assigned to screaming, although the songs often include clear male choirs. The band's style is heavily influenced by groups like Ensiferum and Finntroll . While the style of the debut album The Wanderer is strongly based on black metal bands like Dissection , more folk instruments like bagpipes or bagpipes are used on Waves Are Dancing . The band's mostly Russian lyrics are all about Christian topics.
