Homonationalism

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The political catchphrase homonationalism describes a connection between nationalist ideologies and the LGBT movement and its rights .

The term was first applied by the gender researcher Jasbir Puar in 2007. She tries to describe a process in which social forces identify with the demands of the LGBT community in order to justify heterophobia , racism and xenophobia , in particular prejudices against Islam . These prejudices are mostly related to migrants who are seen as homophobic , while western society is portrayed as very welcoming and safe to the LGBT community. Sexual diversity and the different situations of legal equality of the LGBT community in different countries and areas are used to justify political attitudes against immigration . This phenomenon occurs more and more frequently in political far right parties and among white Americans. An example of this is the phenomenon that gay journalist and writer Milo Yiannopoulos was a figurehead of the Alt-Right in the United States .

The main criticism of the phenomenon is that the selective, sectarian exploitation of the LGBT movement aims to make intolerance acceptable, while at the same time consciously ignoring the discrimination of the LGBT movement that is still taking place in Western societies. Access to same-sex marriage is often cited as an example of equality for homosexuals . This would heteronormalize relationships within the LGBT community and strengthen Western chauvinist positions. In addition, suspicions would be favored against people from those countries that do not recognize same-sex partnerships or still criminalize homosexuality. A direct connection is often seen between Muslims and the criminalization of homosexuality.

Bruno Perreau has criticized the assumptions of Puar's model. While he agrees with her criticism that there are nationalist tendencies in LGBT groups, he argues that Puar idealizes those people she describes as "sexually non-normative ethnicized" people. Perreau explains that the deconstruction of norms cannot be decoupled from their reproduction. Floris Biskamp notes that it is principally racist and imperialist for Puar to criticize homophobia among Muslims, and that she shows an open hostility towards Israel , which she believes the homosexual community for its "racist", "imperialist" and "Islamophobic" purposes instrumentalize.
