Life

Hone Harawira was born in Whangarei in 1955 , grew up in West Auckland , attended St Stephens School there and later studied at the University of Auckland . Through his mother, Titewhai Harawira , a well-known Māori activist, Harawira is related to the Iwi of the Ngāti Hau , Ngāti Wai and Ngāti Hine . On the part of his father John Puriri Harawira there are roots to the Iwi of the Te Aupōuri , Ngāpuhi and Ngāti Whātua . His wife Hilda comes from the Iwi of the Ngāti Haua and Te Rarawa .

His role models are Muhammad Ali , Syd Jackson , Nelson Mandela , Māori Marsden , his mother and his wife, for teaching him the importance of vision and the need for strength, commitment and determination.

Hone Harawira is married and has seven children.

Political activist

Hone Harawira took on important roles in the political debate surrounding the Treaty of Waitangi process. He campaigned for the revitalization of the Maori language and for the creation of its own television station (see Māori Television ), fought against the land expropriation of the Māori by the Pākehā (see Māori Land Rights Movement ) and fought against racism , in New Zealand and above out.

In 1979 he was one of the key players in the He Taua group in Auckland , who beat up engineering students for denigrating the Māori - haka, marking a turning point in the Pākehā's respect for the Māori . He was also involved in the actions against the South African Springboks in 1981, which were exposed to violent protests over the apartheid policy in their country on a tour of New Zealand .

His engagement against the Foreshore and Seabed Act 2004 finally led him to the movement to found the Māori Party and a short time later to the New Zealand Parliament .

Professional career

Since 1985, Hone Harawira has held the following professional positions:

  • Manager of the Aupouri Ngati Kahu Te Rarawa Trust
  • Manager of the Aupouri Māori Trust Board
  • Manager of Te Reo Irirangi O Te Hiku O Te Ika
  • Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Tehiku Media

  • Won the direct mandate for the Māori Electorate Te Tai Tokerau in 2005 with 52.41% of the votes, followed by almost 62% in 2008 and has therefore been an elected member of the House of Representatives since 2005 .

Harawira also maintained his reputation as a rebel and radical activist as a parliamentarian . In addition to violating the parliamentary protocol, he was mainly noticed by verbal attacks and insults. " John Howard is a racist bastard, imposing racist policies on a people who are not in a position to fight back. " Was just one of his insults that garnered public attention.

In December 2009, his abuse of white New Zealanders as " motherf ***** " had almost expelled him from the party. A public apology saved him from party politics. His insult led to 753 complaints to the Race Relations Commissioner ( German : Commissioner for ethnic relations ).

In January 2011, Harawira turned against his own party in an interview by identifying legislative initiatives directed against Māori in the government and describing them as the dark side of the government coalition with the National Party . He came before a desired party exclusion procedure and left the party on February 23, 2011, but without giving up his seat in parliament or giving up the Māori Electorate Te Tai Tokerau . He announced that he would run as an independent candidate or as a candidate for a new political movement for the 2011 constituency.

In April 2011, Harawira founded a new party, the Mana Party . He gave up his seat in parliament as a non-party member of the House of Representatives on May 11, 2011 to push through a by-election in his constituency, Te Tai Tokerau . In this by-election he was able to regain his seat in parliament with 49.15% of the votes cast and be represented for his party in parliament for the first time. For the General Election (parliamentary elections) on November 26, 2011, Hone Harawira will run as the top candidate of the Mana Party .
