List of grape varieties

Honigler is a very old white wine variety that - when fully ripe - can reach very high levels of sugar. Their origin is likely to be in Hungary or the Balkans .

Descent, origin

The ancestry is not yet clear. DNA analysis carried out in 2009 and morphological similarities indicate a possible close relationship with the Austrian variety Roter Veltliner , but a definite determination is still pending. From these authors the variety is led under the name Mézes Fehér. The part of the name “honey” probably refers to the usually high sugar content of the grapes.

The variety Honigler (Mézes Fehér) was a cross partner in the interspecific new breed Lakhegyi Mézes (Honigler x Eger 2).

distribution

The vine used to be widespread in Central Europe, but has largely disappeared here today. Vineyards with this variety can be found in Eastern Austria, Hungary and more often in the Balkans.

properties

The early ripening, strong-growing, high-yielding vine is well resistant to drought, sensitive to winter frost and susceptible to botrytis and both types of powdery mildew.
