Hope Castle (formerly Blayney Castle), an 18th century country house in Castleblayney

Hope Castle , formerly Blayney Castle , is an 18th century country house in the town of Castleblayney ( Irish Baile na Lorgan ) in County Monaghan, Ireland . Over the years the house has served a wide variety of purposes, e.g. B. as a house, barracks, hospital, monastery and finally hotel, before it burned out in 2010. The building is still standing, but is currently uninhabited.

history

The site on which Hope Castle was built originally belonged to Edward Blayney, 1st Baron Blayney , to whom it was loaned in 1607. Blayney was a Welsh soldier who was given lands in Ballynalurgan and Muckno , where he had a stone castle, Blayney Castle , built. The town of Castleblayney grew around this first castle. Blayney was promoted to baron in 1621 and his descendants held the property until the 1830s. In the time of the 2nd Baron Blayney, in 1641, the castle was taken by rebels under the leadership of Hugh Mac Patrick Dubh MacMahon . The baron managed to escape, but his wife and children were taken prisoner.

The 7th Baron Blayney sold part of the land in 1723. It was not until the 1780s that Lieutenant General Andrew Blayney, 11th Baron Blayney , a well-known soldier who owned the property from 1784 to 1834, had the current building stand next to the old castle from Elizabethan times under the name Blayney Castle .

In 1853, The Rt. Hon. Cadwallader Blayney, 12th Baron Blayney , sold the entire property to the wealthy Henry Thomas Hope , who had the building completely renovated. The 12th Baron Blayney was the last of this dynasty. It was only in the possession of the Hope family , the Scottish - Dutch banking family, who are famous for owning the Hope diamond , that the country house was given the new name "Hope Castle", which it still holds today. Henrietta Adela Hope , the daughter of Henry Thomas Hope , who married an English duke, later inherited the property. Her husband was Henry Pelham-Clinton , who bore the courtesy title of Earl of Lincoln when they married in 1861 and who later succeeded his father as the 6th Duke of Newcastle-under-Lyne . HRH Field Marshal Prince Arthur, 1st Duke of Connaught and Strathearn , son of Queen Victoria , and his family lived at Hope Castle from 1900-1904 . The prince was then commander of British troops in Ireland. The Hope family left the property in 1916 and it became barracks during the Irish War of Independence 1919–1921. From 1932 to 1937 it served as Monaghan County Hospital for a few years . From 1942, the Franciscan Order occupied Hope Castle as a monastery until the 1970s. The country house then went back into private hands until it was acquired by Monaghan County Council in the 1980s. The county government leased the house to various people, most recently to local businessman Chris Haren , who rented the property when it was severely damaged by an arson attack in November 2010. Until this fire, Hope Castle was a popular hotel with a bar, lounge, restaurant and several guest rooms.

fire

An arson attack was carried out on the 18th century country house in November 2010, which caused considerable damage to the interior of the hotel. In a very short time the fire spread over the bar and lounge, up the stairwells to the upper rooms. The building was unoccupied at the time of the fire, but the hotel's contents, e.g. B. a large amount of home furnishings, furniture and valuable antiques were completely destroyed. The Gradaí was clear that the arsonists broke into the ground floor where they put out the fire. It is believed that a group of local teenagers forcibly entered the building and deliberately set it on fire. Although the Gardaí interrogated local youths, the culprits were never found.

description

Lieutenant General Andrew Blayney, 11th Baron Blayney, had today's Blayney Castle (also Castle Blayney, later renamed Hope Castle) built in the 1780s. It was redesigned in the Georgian style in 1799 by Irish architect Robert Woodgate .

Hope Castle is a three-story house with five Jochen near an earlier castle, in Victorian times was restored. Some of the decorations are the crowning of the roof parapet and at the entrance of the building, which lies in the middle three bays that extend outwards in an arch. A glass-enclosed porch and a cast-iron decorative canopy were also added. There are also the Torlodges, stables and bathhouses, which give the property a strong impression of long history. When it was taken over by the county administration, the country house was renovated and the 19th century extensions in the gardens and on the main facade were removed. Hope Castle is surrounded by grassland and is near a forest with a large lake called "Black Island".
