Hopea odorata is a species of the genus Hopea ( Hopea ) within the wing fruit family(Dipterocarpaceae). This endangered species that uses the wood isnative totropical Asia .

Vegetative characteristics

Hopea odorata grows as an evergreen, medium-sized to large tree that usually reaches heights of up to 45 meters and trunk diameters of 4.50 meters or more. The straight, cylindrical trunk is free of knots up to a height of about 25 meters. It forms showy buttress roots . The gray to dark brown bark has a scaly surface and is furrowed lengthways and yellow or reddish inside.

The alternate leaves are arranged in a petiole and a leaf blade. The thin petiole is 2 inches long. The simple, deep green leaf blade is ovoid-lanceolate and sickle-shaped with a wedge-shaped blade base with a length of 7 to 14 centimeters and a width of 3 to 7 centimeters. The top and bottom of the leaves are bare.

Generative characteristics

The flowers are in a one-sided, racemose inflorescence . The flower stalk is very short. The relatively small, sweet-smelling, yellowish-white flowers are hermaphroditic and five-fold. There are 15 stamens with narrow, ellipsoidal anthers. The ovoid ovary is spotted or glabrous.

The relatively small, egg-shaped fruits have wings that are 3 to 4 centimeters long and lanceolate and rounded.

Occurrence and endangerment

The distribution area of Hopea odorata is in tropical Asia with a focus on Southeast Asia : Bangladesh , Thailand , Cambodia , Laos , Malaysia , Myanmar , Vietnam and China . Hopea odorata occurs predominantly at altitudes between 0 and 600 meters on nutrient- rich soils and thrives in tropical rainforests on river banks .

In the IUCN Red List of Endangered Species , Hopea odorata is listed as "Vulnerable" = "endangered".

Taxonomy

The first description of Hopea odorata was by William Roxburgh . The specific epithet odorata means fragrant and refers to the sweet-smelling flowers.
