Horné Opatovce was first mentioned in writing in 1253 as terra Apathy de Grana and was built on an area that has belonged to the Hronský Beňadik Abbey since 1075 . The names Epati (1332) and Maior Apati (1335) have been handed down from the 14th century . In 1538 the village became the property of the Gran Chapter. In 1720 the village had a mill, a restaurant, a butcher and 53 taxpayers. In 1828 there were 116 houses and 815 inhabitants who were employed in agriculture.

Until 1918, the place in Persch County belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary and then came to Czechoslovakia or now Slovakia.

After the completion of the aluminum plant Závody Slovenského národného povstania in 1953, today's Slovalco , a slow decline began. The prevailing north winds blew emissions and ash directly over the village and the environmental situation deteriorated noticeably. Cattle, bees and trees were first affected, but later on, numerous health problems were observed in the population. In 1960, the Czechoslovak government ordered the evacuation of the 228 houses and 1,380 inhabitants of the municipality in resolution No. 188; the exodus lasted nine years. Finally, on July 31, 1969, Horné Opatovce was wiped out from the map and the municipality of Žiar nad Hronom was added.

The inhabitants of the former village mostly live in Žiar nad Hronom, but also all over the former Czechoslovakia (Bratislava, Piešťany, Košice, Prague ...). Only the church, the school building and the cemetery remain of the Horné Opatovce municipality, and there are also garbage dumps on the site.

Meetings of former residents take place every few years; In 1995 a monument in the form of a miniature model by Horné Opatovce was erected.

graveyard

A Gothic church, probably from the 15th century , stood on the site of today's church . Despite several expansions, the capacity was still insufficient, so it was demolished at the beginning of the 20th century and today's St. Laurentius Church ( Kostol svätého Vavrinca in Slovak ) was built in a mixed neo-Gothic and neo-Romanesque style in 1910-11 . It has the shape of a cross, the ship is 24 m long, 8.55 m wide and 12 m high.

The church was renovated in 2010 and is in relatively good condition, although the furnishings have either been moved or looted.
