Horn wreath

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hornkranz (rarely Afrikaans Hoornkrans ; khoekhoegowab Natas ) is a farm in Namibia . It gained fame through the battle of Hornkranz during the times of German South West Africa . Graves from this period still bear witness to the battle of that time.

Hornkranz is located in the Khomashochland west of the capital Windhoek . The farm extends in the south to the Kuiseb , one of the largest rivers in the country.

Surname

The name Hornkranz is said to be due to the large number of wild animals that have drunk on the Goab River. Because of the mass, many animals are said to have been trampled to death and a wreath of horns formed. In Afrikaans the place is rarely called Hoornkrans , in Khoekhoegowab it is known as Nata , which means something like sweat .

history

Together with the Hornkranz-Süd farm to the south, the farm formed an important retreat for the San thousands of years ago . Rock paintings testify to this . From 1800 the Herero and Nama in particular are said to have used the area as grazing grounds and travel routes. A Heitsi-Eibeb , a semi-divine place, is said to be located here .

Hendrik Witbooi settled on the farm in 1888, but left it again in 1902 at the latest when the farm was assigned to the management of the protected area. The first farm owner from 1908 was the German Curt Bieder , who took over the 10,000 hectare farm from Eduard Zachau . He was unable to raise the purchase price of the farm that had been sold to him two years earlier. In 1911 a police station was built on the farm, which later served as a farmhouse.

From 1927 Bieder sold the farm in two parts before it was divided into three farms.

Current

The Namibian police NAMPOL carried out a major operation called Hornkranz together with the Namibian Defense Force at the turn of the year 2018/19 . This designation was questioned due to the historical circumstances in the population and decidedly rejected by the Nama.
