geography

Almenningaskarð on Hornstrandir, view of the Denmark Strait

The exact borders of the area are somewhat controversial, but it is usually said that the border is in the east at Geirólfsgnúp. The western limit is usually set at Rit, west of the Aðalvík bay .

In the north lies the Denmark Strait , a strait between Greenland and Iceland that connects the North Atlantic and the Arctic Ocean . In the south of the Hornstrandir peninsula are the Jökulfirðir fjords , which are branches of the Ísafjarðardjúp . The eastern part of the peninsula is called Austur-Strandir, the western part is Vestur-Strandir.

The north-west of Hornstrandir is the Straumnes headland , which lies north of the Aðalvík bay and west of the Rekavík bays and the larger Fljótavík .

history

The area was densely populated from the Middle Ages to the end of the 19th century. The people mainly benefited from the rich fishing grounds in the North Atlantic.

In the meantime, however, the area is completely uninhabited in winter. However, numerous houses are still maintained and serve as accommodation for the increasingly numerous summer guests who come to the remote area.

That is why there are regular boat connections with speedboats from Bolungarvík and Ísafjörður across the wide Ísafjarðardjúp fjord in summer .
