Horst A. Wessel

Horst A. Wessel (born April 12, 1943 in Bonn ) is a German historian and corporate archivist. From 1983 to 2008 he was the head of the Mannesmann Archive.

Life

Horst Wessel studied German, history and economic history at the University of Bonn . As an assistant to Hans Pohl , he was involved in founding the Society for Company History and became its first managing director in 1976 (until 1983). During this time he did his doctorate with a thesis on the development of electrical communications in Germany and was the editor in charge of the journal for corporate history .

Since then, electrical engineering has been one of his main research areas. This led to the fact that from 1984 he organized the colloquia of the VDE committee “History of Electrical Engineering” and was chairman of this committee from 1995 to 2007.

In 1983 Wessel moved to the Mannesmann AG corporate archive , which he took over from his predecessor Lutz Hatzfeld and which he managed until he retired (2008).

Wessel was chairman of the Association of German Business Archivists (1985–1992), adjunct professor at the University of Düsseldorf (since 2001) and lectured at the universities of Düsseldorf and Erlangen. In 2008 he was awarded the Karl Joachim Euler Medal for special services to the history of electrical engineering . From 1997 to 2013 he was chairman of the “Alter Münstereifeler” association, and since 2013 honorary chairman. From 2001 to 2011 he was chairman of the Düsseldorf History Association . From 1995 to 2003 he was a member of the scientific advisory board of the Society for Company History , in 2006 he founded the sponsoring association “MannesmannHaus e. V. “, of which he has been chairman since then.
