Horst Freiberger (politician)

Horst Freiberger (born November 11, 1957 in Fürstenfeld ) is an Austrian politician ( SPÖ ) and district secretary of the Austrian Federation of Trade Unions (ÖGB). From 1995 to 2002 he was a member of the Austrian Federal Council .

education and profession

Freiberger attended elementary school in Fürsztenfeld between 1964 and 1968. He switched to the Fürstenfeld Realgymnasium, which he attended until 1973, and then graduated from 1973 to 1974 at the technical college in Pinkafeld . In 1974 Freiberger broke off his school education and learned the trade of machine fitter between 1974 and 1978, where he attended the vocational school until 1978. After the apprenticeship completed Freiberger 1978 to 1979 the civil service .

From 1978 to 1981 Freiberger worked as a machine fitter at the Elin company in Weiz , after which he worked from 1981 to 1983 as the youth secretary of the metal-mining-energy union in Styria. In 1984 he joined the Austrian Federation of Trade Unions, for which he worked as ÖGB district secretary in the Fürstenfeld district .

Politics and functions

Freiberger came into politics through trade union work, where he held various positions in the youth union between 1976 and 1981. In 1985 he became a member of the municipality council of Fürstenfeld and was active as a councilor in Fürstenfeld from 1992 to 1994. Within the party, he was active as district party chairman of the SPÖ Fürstenfeld from 1994, and from this year he also worked as a member of the state party executive of the SPÖ Styria. Between 1994 and 2000 Freiberger was also a member of the plenary assembly of the Chamber for Workers and Salaried Employees for Styria.

Freiberger represented the SPÖ Styria from January 1, 1995 to December 6, 2002 in the Austrian Federal Council. Among other things, he was deputy chairman of the committee for economic affairs, deputy chairman of the committee for science and transport, deputy chairman of the committee for transport, innovation and technology, deputy chairman of the committee for economy and labor as well as secretary of the economic committee and the committee for economic affairs.
