Horst Irrgang

Horst Irrgang (born 1929 in Magdeburg ; died 1997 in Halle (Saale) ) was a German composer , conductor and musicologist .

Live and act

From 1948 to 1954 Horst Irrgang studied school music in Weimar , German at the University of Jena and music education (with Fritz Reuter ) and musicology (with Max Schneider ) at the University of Halle . As a composer and conductor he devoted his life to amateur music. From 1954 to 1958 he was artistic director of the folk art ensemble of the VEB Leuna-Werke Walter Ulbricht . In 1958 he took over the choir direction of the Louis Fürnberg Ensemble at the University of Leipzig , which he held until 1965. Towards the end of the 1950s, he also took over the management of the choir in the VEB building project planning in Halle. Irrgang was a board member of the Association of Composers and Musicologists of the GDR and for many years head of the folk music section of the Halle / Magdeburg district association.

As a musicologist, Horst Irrgang was lecturer at VEB Breitkopf & Härtel in Leipzig (German publishing house for music) since 1959 . He published numerous choir and song books with his own movements, which were part of the standard repertoire of many choirs, especially in the GDR . He also wrote instrumental sets of German folk and children's songs, for example for two recorders or two violins, which have appeared in multiple editions.

His better-known works include the “Picture Book with Music” Bummi in Afrika (1967) with texts by Ursula Werner-Böhnke and illustrations by Ingeborg Meyer-Rey . A sequel appeared in 1976 under the title Bummi am Nordpol . These Irrgangs compositions consist of easy-to-sing songs with piano accompaniment, which can also be performed orchestral. Texts and songs enable a performance in a school context or in the leisure area. His songs were also broadcast on the radio.

In 1989 he was awarded the Handel Prize of the Halle district .
