life and career

When SC progress Weissenfels made it to the GDR league in 1954/55, the 21-year-old striker Horst Meyer was one of the players. He was regularly used on the left attacking side. The SC progress made his league debut in the simple transition round carried out in the fall of 1955, which served to align with the calendar year schedule in effect from 1956. Even under the new coach Herbert Worbs , Meyer continued to play a left winger and played all 13 games of the transition round. In the following two seasons, 1956 and 1957, Meyer also played all point games in his original position.

In 1958 he lost his regular place to Heinz Degenkolbe, who was four years his junior . Meyer came to 20 missions in the 26-game season, half of which he only made as a substitute. Only after coach Worbs changed the attack formation of the SC progress in 1959 and ordered Meyer to the half-left storm position, this could play into the starting eleven again. Not only did he play 24 point games, he also became the team's top scorer with ten goals. He also played a decisive role in the fact that SC Progress Weissenfels finished the season in sixth and thus achieved the best result in its history. For the 1960 season, the team got a new coach, Gerhard Gläser , who deployed Meyer more flexibly in various attacking positions. Meyer again played all 26 point games and this time was Weißenfels the most accurate player with 13 goals. His team, however, did not achieve a single victory during the entire season, far behind, they had to relegate from the league.

Since a return to the elite league was no longer achieved, Horst Meyer's senior league career was over. From 1956 to 1960 he had completed 122 league games, which corresponds to a rate of 94 percent. With his 41 goals, he became the best Weißenfelser Oberliga shooter of all time. Meyer remained after the descent and the demotion of the sports club to the company sports community of the progress team. In the GDR league season 1961/62, which ran over 39 rounds because of the return to the summer-spring schedule, Meyer was again Weißenfels top scorer and fourth best scorer in the GDR league with 20 goals. In 1966 he experienced a decline for the second time when progress Weissenfels was relegated from the second-rate GDR league to the Halle district league. Meanwhile 33 years old, he helped his team as the district league top scorer with 23 goals for immediate promotion.
