Hortensius is an impact crater on the western front of the moon in the Mare Insularum plain , southwest of Copernicus and northwest of Reinhold . The round crater rim is sharply defined. The crater is shaped like a bowl with a flat bottom.
North of Hortensius is a group of six domes of small shield volcanoes .

The crater was officially named by the IAU in 1935 after the Dutch astronomer and mathematician Martin van den Hove .
