exchange

The host saxifrage ( Saxifraga hostii exchange ) is a plant style of the genus saxifrage ( Saxifraga ). The name honors the imperial personal physician and botanist Nicolaus Thomas Host (1761–1834), who also wrote a Flora of Austria.

features

The host saxifrage is an evergreen, perennial plant that forms rosette lawns or rosette pads as well as short above-ground runners. It reaches heights of growth of 20 to 60 centimeters. The basal leaves are clearly serrated, 5 to 10 times as long as they are wide, little broadened towards the tip, more or less spread out and measure 20 to 100 × 4 to 11 millimeters. The panicle branches usually have (2) 5 to 12 flowers . The petals are 4 to 8 millimeters long, colored white and sometimes dotted purple.

The flowering period extends from May to July.

The species has chromosome number 2n = 28.

Occurrence

The species occurs in the southern and eastern Alps on limestone cliffs, in crevices and on swelling limestone tuffs at altitudes of (400) 1400 to 2500 meters. It is also naturalized in individual places in France and the Czech Republic (near Prague).

Systematics

There are 2 subspecies of Saxifraga hostii :

  • Saxifraga hostii subsp. hostii : The rosettes have a diameter of 4 to 15 centimeters. The leaves are rounded at the front.
  • Rhaetian saxifrage ( Saxifraga hostii subsp. Rhaetica (A. Kern.) Braun-Blanq. ): The rosettes have a diameter of 4 to 8 centimeters. The leaves are pointed in front.

The species hybridizes with the panicle saxifrage ( Saxifraga paniculata ). The hybrid is then called Saxifraga × churchillii Huter .

use

The host saxifrage is widely used as a ground cover ornamental plant in rock gardens.
