The Ritz Hotel London is a 137 room luxury hotel in London on Piccadilly next to Green Park .

history

The Swiss hotelier César Ritz opened the hotel on May 24, 1906. The building was constructed during the Belle Époque in a neoclassical style, with the arcades borrowing from the Parisian architecture of Rue de Rivoli . Its architects were Charles Mewès , who had previously designed the Hôtel Ritz in Paris , and Arthur Joseph Davis in collaboration with the Swedish engineer Sven Bylander. The Ritz was the first hotel in the UK to have a private bathroom in each suite .

Ritz personally ran the hotel for many years. His French chef Auguste Escoffier was responsible for the house's haute cuisine . Ritz had a special bell installed in the entrance area, with which the receptionist at the door could notify the staff of the arrival of a royal highness. The high standards of service and luxurious amenities that Ritz established were new to Londoners at the end of the Victorian Age and set standards for the entire hotel industry.

The Scottish billionaire twins Frederick and David Barclay bought the hotel for £ 80 million through their company Ellerman Investments in October 1995 . It took ten years to renovate the house and it cost £ 50 million. The hotel is one of the Leading Hotels of the World .

Former Prime Minister of the United Kingdom , Margaret Thatcher , stayed in a suite at the Ritz Hotel for the last four months of her life , where she died of a stroke on April 8, 2013 .

Premises

The most famous space of the Ritz is the Palm Court , which is opulent in the style of Louis XVI. furnished tea room. The "Tea at the Ritz" was already taken by Edward VII , Charlie Chaplin , Sir Winston Churchill , Charles de Gaulle , Noël Coward , Judy Garland , Evelyn Waugh and Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother . The Ritz Restaurant is often referred to as one of the most beautiful restaurants in Europe - furnished with so many chandeliers that the ceiling had to be specially reinforced to support its weight. The Rivoli Bar , built in the Art Deco style, was designed in 2001 by the interior designer Tessa Kennedy. The hotel has several private dining rooms, including the Marie Antoinette Suite , which was used as a conference room for meetings between Churchill, de Gaulle and Eisenhower during World War II .

The Ritz Club Casino, which is known as one of the most exclusive privately run casinos in Europe, is now located in the hotel's former ballroom .
