history

The Gasthof Zum Schwarzen Adler already existed at the beginning of the 17th century and is the oldest still in operation in Stendal. It is said that the arsonist Grete Minde stayed here in 1617. In the 19th century the inn belonged to the Bech family. In 1843 the ballroom of the house was modernized and inaugurated with a masked ball . In 1863 the Prussian Crown Prince Friedrich Wilhelm stayed in the Black Eagle on the occasion of a trip to Altmark . In 1897 disputes over the liquor license , which Hermann Bech was granted again, were settled. The permit was in doubt because of the proximity to the Sankt-Marien-Kirche. Between 1905 and 1913 the ballroom was modernized again.

In 1920 the Society of Farmers took over the hotel business, which was now run as the Farmers ' House . In 1925, the property at Kornmarkt 7 was also acquired, where the coachman's bar operated and a stable for 25 horses and two carriage sheds were built. Today the hotel car park is located there.

In 1938 Willy Picht took over the hotel, which he now ran again under the name Schwarzer Adler. Around 1940, Max Schmeling boxed in the ballroom during an exhibition match . After the end of the Second World War, the hall served temporarily as quarters for 204 refugees. In 1958 it was then an alternative venue for the Altmark Theater , the actual venue of which had been closed by the building police . In the 1980s the hall then served as a cinema .

The Picht family ran the house until 1998. This was followed by modernization and finally in 2002 the new opening. In 2005 the large ballroom was restored.

In the local register of monuments , the hotel is listed as a monument under registration number 094 18015 .
