Hour of Power is an American television service from the Presbyterian Church in Irvine, California , a congregation of the Reformed Church in America . In 1970 the program started with a broadcaster in Los Angeles. Since then, the Hour of Power has been shown continuously on American television, making it one of the longest-running shows in the US and the most-watched television service in the world (200 countries, 10–30 million viewers). The German branch is financed by the Hour of Power Deutschland eV association, which has been working financially independently since 2010.

history

Robert H. Schuller started broadcasting television on the advice of Billy Graham in 1970 . First the television services were recorded in the Garden Grove Community Church , from 1980 to 2013 in the Crystal Cathedral in Garden Grove (California) and after a move of the congregation between July 2013 and March 2018 in the 1500 m away Sheperd's Grove Church , the former Catholic church St. Callistus Church and School . After moving again to Irvine Presbyterian Church in Orange County , about 20 km away , services have been recorded here since April 2018, after this congregation joined Sheperd's Grove Church . The title Hour of Power remains unchanged. The Hour of Power is presided over by the International Council of the Crystal Cathedral Ministries . The program is produced by Baas Creative, a Michigan film production company. A network of eleven international offices supports the work in Australia , Canada , Hong Kong , Iceland , New Zealand , the People's Republic of China , Ireland , Russia , Sweden , South Africa and other African countries. There are offices in Europe in Germany, Great Britain , the Netherlands , Switzerland and Austria .

In addition to the founder Robert H. Schuller (until 2012), pastors such as Bill Hybels , Kirbyjon Caldwell , Walt Kallestad , John C. Maxwell , Juan Carlos Ortiz and others have been preaching since October 2008 . Pastor Bobby Schuller has been the main pastor of this program since June 2012 .

Religious events

The Hour of Power often includes an interview with a well-known personality or someone who has experienced something extraordinary. The sermons focus on positive messages. The Hour of Power is a missionary service that aims to convey God's love to people and encourage them to join a local Christian church or community.

The music program, which is an important part of the Hour of Power , has been organized by the choir under the direction of Don Neuen and the orchestra under the direction of Marc Riley since October 2015. In August 2017 Irene Messoloras took over the choir management as the new conductor.

From 2004 to the end of 2007, the Hour of Power was shown on VOX on Sundays . Before that, Hour of Power was broadcast on NBC for a number of years . From February 2008 to February 2009, the Hour of Power was broadcast on the station Das Vierte on Sunday morning. Since March 2010 the service has been broadcast on Tele 5 and on Bibel TV . It is synchronized using the voice-over procedure. The music program can be seen from October 4, 2015 on Bibel TV.

Succession planning

There was also multiple criticism of the succession plan for Robert H. Schuller. In 2006 he installed his only son Robert Anthony Schuller as his successor, who, according to the New York Times , had to take on a large mountain of debt caused by construction projects. When the then, among other things, wanted to reorganize the financial activities and remove members with “conflicts of interest” from the board of directors, this led to a break with his father in 2008 and the accusation that his sermons were “not anointed”. Since 2009 the leadership has been with his sister Sheila Schuller Coleman, a daughter of the founder, as chief pastor.

On May 16, 2010, Sheila Schuller announced on her television program that Hour of Power was on the verge of bankruptcy due to the financial crisis. Close to tears, she described the serious financial situation. She later tried to avert bankruptcy by soliciting donations: In her emotional speech, she opened a bag that contained ten dollars. These ten dollars were to be increased by a miracle, as in the case of the multiplication of the bread in the New Testament, in that viewers donated ten dollars or five euros via SMS. The donation phone number was shown during the sermon.

In mid-October 2010, the reformed community, which has existed for 55 years, filed for bankruptcy. The Christian media magazine pro quotes the pastor, according to which the congregation has total liabilities of around 36 million euros.

In mid-March 2012, Robert H. Schuller and his wife Arvella resigned from their board positions at Hour of Power. The Schullers family then stated that Robert Schuller suffered from dementia, that he and his wife therefore needed rest and had withdrawn from the public.

In early 2012, after a difficult financial period, the entire Crystal Cathedral campus became the property of the Catholic Diocese of Orange County. The Hour of Power could have continued to use the church for its services for another three years . But already in July 2013, many members of this congregation moved to a smaller church building of the former St. Callistus' Catholic Church nearby.

The television programs abroad, including the German-speaking broadcasters in Europe, are not affected by the bankruptcy, as the broadcasts and donations in the broadcast area are the responsibility of legally independent subsidiaries.

In the current reception, the contradiction between reality and a "limitlessly optimistic doctrine" met with a lack of understanding both in neutral media and in religious (cf. prosperity gospel ) and ideological media.
