How It Is (Wap Bap ...) ( English as "[It's] as it is (Wap Bap ...)") is an English-language song of the German web video - producer Bianca Claßen , better known as "Bibi" from the YouTube channel " BibisBeautyPalace “. It was released on May 5, 2017 via the Warner Music record label . The associated music video is the most negatively rated video on a German-speaking YouTube channel.

background

Bianca Heinicke alias Bibi H.

How It Is (Wap Bap…) was written by Dave Knight and Sam Sommer and composed by the latter. The production took over the film production company Chinzilla Films.

On December 10, 2016, Claßen published a video on her YouTube channel in which she reported about her interest in a music career. Then Claßen contacted the songwriter Sam Sommer to produce his own song. He sent her the demo version of a song he had written years ago. Claßen then sang this demo version. Claßen worked with Warner Music for the publication and the promotion, and also took singing lessons.

The song was released on May 5, 2017.

Musical and content

The song is written in 4/4 time and begins with a catchy melody played on a ukulele . The tempo is 73 bpm . The rhythm is indicated by high-level piano tones. After four bars, Claßen begins with the first stanza. A kick begins to accompany the song in the chorus. After two more stanzas and a chorus, the song breaks down before the chorus sounds again.

In the song, the lyrical self tells that although it is haunted by bad luck, it remains optimistic and that this ultimately proves itself. Claßen summarized the content of the song in her announcement video as the story of a person who should not give up after many negative events.

Music video

The shooting of the official music video was completed within two days in the “Huize Herbosch” in Antwerp . The Editor took two months to complete.

Negative reviews

With 3.1 million dislikes, the associated music video on YouTube is the most negatively rated video on a German-speaking YouTube channel. The previous negative record holder in German-speaking countries, "Everyday Saturday (remix)" by ApoRed was more than three times outbid. At times it became the fifth most negatively rated YouTube video worldwide, but has now been ousted from this position.

criticism

The song received mostly negative reviews. The singer's text, voice and articulation as well as the automatic pitch correction were particularly criticized . Nicolas Heine from the online magazine “ Dance Charts ” complained that Claßen's pronunciation was very poor and had a strong accent, and that the song was generally flat and childish. He compared the song with works by relevant promotional song producers. The only positive thing is the success, which is probably due to "that the song is not offensive".

Carsten Heidböhmer from " Stern " criticized the overall concept of the song: both build-up and lyrics, Claßens image and the potential. The refrain is penetrating and the text is conceived as unimaginative. The song has “what it takes to become the least popular song of all time”.

In addition to the strong negative response, there were allegations that the song was a plagiarism of the song The Show by the Australian singer Lenka ; Rhythm, melody and tones are very similar.

The song's promotion campaign also received criticism; Little faith was given to the statement that only more CDs would be produced if high numbers of pre-sales were achieved and rather an intention to profit was suspected. The question was also asked what the V-Blogger's intention was to publish a song that emphasized that she could not sing.

Two days after the publication, Claßen commented for the first time on the allegations and the negative criticism. In the vlog , she was surprised at the great attention it received and emphasized that not everyone should think the song was good and everyone should judge for themselves.

Commercial win

How It Is (Wap Bap…) moved into the top 3 of several online music services in Germany, Austria and Switzerland within the first day . In the official singles charts the song rose to number 9, with which Claßen recorded their first single chart placement; the success was short with two weeks in the top 100.

More reactions

The music and video also attracted ridicule from other web video producers who satirized the work .

A few days after publication, the rapper Jonas Platin put an acoustically processed version of the original online, which he passed off as the vocal recording before the pitch correction. The recording spread within a very short time in several social networks and attracted a lot of attention. Jonas Platin later announced this as a fake .
