Howard Clinebell

Howard John Clinebell (born June 3, 1922 in Springfield , Illinois , † April 13, 2005 in Santa Barbara ) was a Methodist pastor and professor of pastoral care . He pioneered a pastoral approach that combines psychotherapy and faith.

Live and act

Howard Clinebell was born on June 3, 1922 in Springfield , Illinois to Howard J. and Clem Clinebell, b. Whittenberg born. He studied theology at DePauw University in Indiana , Garrett Theological Seminary in Illinois, and received his PhD from Columbia University in New York City . He also studied psychotherapy at the William White Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Psychoanalysis in New York City.

In the mid-1950s, Clinebell served as a pastor for the First United Methodist Church in Pasadena . He later became a chaplain at the Methodist Hospital in Arcadia . In 1959 he became professor of "Pastoral Psychology" at the Claremont School of Theology . Clinebell retired from active service in 1988.

Clinebell has authored more than 20 books, several of which have been translated into German. Among the most influential are Understanding and Counseling the Alcoholic Through Religion and Psychology (1956) and Basic Types of Pastoral Counseling (1966, revised new edition Basic Types of Pastoral Care and Counseling 1984; German: Modelle beratender Seelsorge . 1971; 5th ed. 1985) . With his book on the pastoral care of alcoholics, he introduced the approach in Christian circles to view alcoholism as a disease rather than a weakness of character .

As one of the fathers of the pastoral care movement, Clinebell advocated teaching psychotherapy to students who would be active in some form of counseling in their later career. He was a founding member of the American Association of Pastoral Counselors .

In addition to pastoral care, Clinebell dealt in the course of his career with topics such as the problems of the individual in the context of relationships, the effects of social systems on the lives of individuals and the interaction between humans and nature.

Howard Clinebell died in Santa Barbara on April 13, 2005 of complications from Parkinson's disease .
