Howard Robard Hughes Sr. (born  September 9, 1869 in Lancaster , Missouri , †  January 14, 1924 in Houston , Texas ) was an American inventor , entrepreneur and founder of the Hughes Tool Company .

Live and act

Hughes studied at Harvard University and the University of Iowa without a degree. After that he still worked as a lawyer. Soon he became more interested in oil exploration and moved to Texas . Together with a partner, he ran a drilling company. To be able to drill through rock, he developed new drill bits , which he patented. His drill bits proved to be powerful in drilling through rock layers and enabled oil production from previously inaccessible resources. In 1909 he and his partner Walter Sharp founded the Sharp-Hughes Tool Company . After Sharp's death in 1912, he ran the company alone and some time later took over the shares of the Sharp family. In 1915 the company was renamed the Hughes Tool Company. He continuously improved the drilling tools and eventually held over 50 patents.

After Hughes' death in 1924 at the age of 54, his then 18-year-old son Howard Hughes Jr. inherited a fortune in the millions. The family business forms the financial basis for its diverse projects and entrepreneurial activities.
