Hoya ariadna is a plant of the genus of wax flowers ( Hoya ) of the subfamily of asclepiadoideae (Asclepiadoideae).

features

Hoya ariadna is a perennial herbaceous plant that grows climbing. The comparatively thick shoots are densely hairy with bristles. The opposite leaves are petiolate. The thick, hairy stems measure 1 to 2 cm in length. The thick, leathery to fleshy leaf blades are oblong-elliptical and 7.5 to 10 cm (3 to 4 inches) long, and about 5 cm (two inches) wide. They are rounded at the base, rounded at the apex, usually with a small tip. The top, covered with a waxy layer, is light green with a shiny, bare surface. The edges and the tip are bent over. On the upper side, the central rib is sunk in a pit, protruding clearly on the underside. The leaf veins are clearly pronounced.

The inflorescence is horizontal or hangs slightly over. There are 6 to 10 flowers per inflorescence. The top of the inflorescence is domed. The peduncle is short, thick and hairy downy. The corolla measures up to 3.5 cm ( 1½ inch ) in diameter. The corolla is flat, cup-shaped. The triangular petals are clearly curved upwards. They are triangular to slightly ovoid and pointed. The upper side is colored whitish-yellowish, greenish-yellowish, light orange to dark orange. The edges and the tips of the tips are a little lighter in color. The undersides are greenish to greenish-yellowish. The top is bare and shiny. The secondary crown is reddish in the center, the tips of the secondary crown are yellowish and broad and apically rounded. The inner appendages are pointed.

The Pollinia are wingless, so they have no membranous membrane on the side. The corspusculum is pear-shaped with a point on the broadly rounded top. The caudiculae (translator arms) consist of two elements of a dark material, which are connected by a transparent membrane, and which extends over the entire length of the caudiculae.

The fruits are up to about 23 cm ( 9 inches ) long ,

Geographical distribution and habitat

The species is so far only known for certain from the Moluccas. It occurs there in tropical rainforests.

Taxonomy

The taxon was established in 1844 by Joseph Decaisne in the 8th volume of de Condolle's Prodromus Systematis Naturalis Regni Vegetabilis . It is essentially based on the example that Georg Eberhard Rumpf described. The holotype of Hoya ariadna comes from the island of Ambon (Prov. Maluku , Indonesia).

In 2001 David Kleijn and Ruurd van Donkelaar presented Hoya ariadna Decaisne (1844) and also Hoya sussuela (Roxb.) Merr. (1917) in the synonymy of Hoya coronaria Blume (1827).

The taxon Hoya coronaria was established by Karl Ludwig von Blume in 1827 . In 2001, Kleijn and Donkelaar designated specimen L 898.168-121 as the lectotype. Another isotype has the number L 898.168-128. The two specimens come from the island of Java .

Wanntorp (2009) and Wanntorp et al. (2011) again list Hoya ariadna and Hoya coronaria as separate species, as do Surisa Somadee and Jens Kühne (2011). According to Wanntorp and Wanntorp et al. Hoya ariadna forms a small monophylum together with Hoya affinis and Hoya ciliata .
