Hryhorij Piwtorak

Hryhorij Petrowytsch Piwtorak ( Ukrainian Григорій Петрович Півторак , transliteration Hryhorij Petrovyč Pivtorak ; born June 14, 1935 in Korytyschtsche , Sumy Oblast , Ukrainian SSR ) is a Ukrainian linguist and philologist .

Life

Etymological Dictionary of the Ukrainian Language (1982)

By 1959, Hryhorij Piwtorak graduated from the State Pedagogical Institute in Poltava . He then studied Ukrainian language , literature and history and Belarusian language at the Institute of Linguistics - Slavic Languages AA Potebnja in Kiev between 1961 and 1964 and defended his dissertation there in 1965. Piwtorak has been a PhD in Philology since 1990 and has been a professor at the AA Potebnja Institute of Linguistics of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine , where he has been employed since 1964. Piwtorak was a corresponding member from 1997 and has been a full member of the academy since 2009.

Piwtorak has received numerous awards and honors, including the title of Honored in Science of Ukraine in 2011 .

He is married to the musicologist and professor at the National Music Academy of Ukraine Lidija Kornij ( Лідія Пилипівна Корній ; * 1942).

Hryhorij Piwtorak is the author of more than 250 works on the history and dialects of the Eastern languages and ethnogenesis of the Eastern Slavs , and co-author of the book Etymological Dictionary of the Ukrainian Language ( Етимологічний словник української мови ).
