Huang Binhong

Huang Binhong ( Chinese  黃賓虹  /  黄宾虹 , Pinyin Huáng Bīnghóng ; * 1864 , † March 25, 1955 ) was an important Chinese painter.

He was born in 1864 in Jinhua County, Zhejiang Province . As the son of a wealthy merchant, he was brought up in the traditional way and learned from painters in Yangzhou . He opened his own painting school in Anhui and later one in Shanghai . He made some trips and sketched landscapes that he used as a template for paintings. He mixed old style and modern realism. His pictures have a remarkable plasticity. He also turned to poetry. From 1937 to 1948 he taught at the Art Academy in Beijing , then in Hangzhou. In the People's Republic he was honored many times and was accepted on the board of the artists' association. He died on March 25, 1955 and bequeathed his extensive works, including ten thousand sketches, to the state.

Huang Binhong was a member of the Xīlíng Seal Society in Huangzhou.
