Huben Cherkelov
Houben RT (born January 23, 1970 in Kardschali , Bulgaria , as Bulgarian Хубен Черкелов , transcriptions: German Huben Tscherkelow, English Houben Tcherkelov also: Hoben Cherkelov) is a Bulgarian painter and experimental artist.
Life
Cherkelov studied art at the National Art Academy in Sofia and was associated with the radical movement around the XXL gallery, of which he was a co-founder, among others with Swilen Stefanow . During this time he witnessed the separation of Bulgaria from the Soviet Union and its totalitarian regime. In his earlier photographs, films and works, post-communist Bulgaria and Bulgarian art are the recurring themes. Cherkelov later painted pictures of American and other national currencies, using the techniques of impasto , glaze , and watercolor . He also used bacteria to create images in culture media that are modeled on the obverse of coins.
In his video project “Reality Show” in 1998, Cherkelov documented a nightly trip in a limousine through Sofia, during which he followed the instructions of a stranger and which was similar to a late-night TV show. At the reopening of the Museum of Biblical Arts in New York, a work by Cherkelov was exhibited that shows the mutilated head of John the Baptist in a representation on wallpaper.
He lives in New York .
