Hubert Frankemölle

Hubert Frankemölle (born January 10, 1939 in Stadtlohn ) is a German Catholic theologian . He is a New Testament scholar and became known for commenting on New Testament writings and for publications on Christian-Jewish issues and the emergence of Christianity from Judaism .

Life

In 1959 Frankemölle graduated from the humanistic Alexander-Hegius-Gymnasium in Ahaus . He studied Catholic theology and Latin in Münster , Munich and Tübingen . In 1968 he passed his first state examination in philology and was then from 1969 to 1972 first research assistant , then research assistant to Joachim Gnilka in the seminar for New Testament exegesis at the department of Catholic theology at the University of Münster. In 1972 he was with the work of Yahweh Association and Church of Christ - studies of form and tradition History of the Gospel according to Matthew as a doctor of theology doctorate .

From the winter semester 1972/1973 Frankemölle was Academic Councilor , from 1974 Senior Councilor for Exegesis of the New Testament and Biblical Greek in Münster. From the summer semester 1979 he was full professor for exegesis of the New Testament at the Institute for Catholic Theology at the University of Paderborn and was retired at the end of the winter semester 2003/2004.

Frankemölle is a member of the working group of German-speaking Catholic New Testament scholars, of which he was vice chairman from 1989 to 1993 and of which he was chairman from 1993 to 1997. He is also a member of the Societas Novi Testamenti. From 1984 to 1993 he was a member of the Scientific Advisory Board of the Catholic Biblical Works and finally its first chairman.

From 1982 to 2004 Frankemölle edited the series of dissertations and post-doctoral theses in Stuttgart Biblical Contributions together with the Old Testament scholar Frank-Lothar Hossfeld , Bonn . From 1997 he was editor of the dissertation and habilitation series New Testament treatises ; since 2003 this has been done together with the Münster New Testament scholar Martin Ebner. From 1991 to 1994 he was second, from 1995 to 1999 first expert reviewer of the German Research Foundation (DFG).

In 1987 Frankemölle founded the Society for Christian-Jewish Cooperation in Paderborn and was its executive chairman until 2011. From 2000 to 2010 he sat on the board of the German Coordination Council of the Societies for Christian-Jewish Cooperation . In 2006 he initiated and was involved in organizing the first official meeting after the Shoah of rabbis in Germany and the German Bishops' Conference and the Evangelical Church in Germany ; these meetings have continued annually to this day in the "Week of Brotherhood". Since 1997 he has been a member of the discussion group “Jews and Christians” at the Central Committee of German Catholics and since 2007 a member of the “Sub-Commission for Religious Relations with Judaism” of the German Bishops' Conference.

Frankemölle has been married to Senior Student Councilor Renate Frankemölle-Stieler since 1966 and has two children.

Frankemölle's work focuses on the methodical and hermeneutical problems of interpreting and understanding the texts of the New Testament in the context of Greek-speaking Judaism at the turn of the century.
