biography

Podstransky gained his first musical experience with the Vienna Woods Boys' Choir . After graduating from high school, he first completed a teacher training course, but already began to write his own compositions. He then moved to Switzerland and in 1958 began studying music at the Lucerne Conservatory in the subjects of music theory and piano, which he successfully completed. From 1969 Podstransky worked there as a lecturer in music theory. In 1973 he was naturalized and settled in Zug . In 1978 Podstransky composed a Dreilinden Suite for piano, violin and cello with Albert Jenny , Albert Benz and Peter Benary for the International Music Festival in Lucerne , which received international attention.

For his cantata Trost , composed in 1993 for alto, speaker, choir and orchestra, he received the 1994 Culture Prize of the Swiss Bank Corporation (now UBS). Max Huwyler wrote the libretto , which resulted in a longstanding collaboration. The composition commissions increased - so works like Zur Latterzeit (four songs for medium voice and twelve solo strings, 1994) were created. This composition commission from Rudolf Baumgartner and the Festival Strings was premiered in 1998 as part of the "Lucerne Mozart Days" by Alois Koch with the Lucerne Academy Choir . In the same year Podstransky set the poem Arbol adentro by Octavio Paz for soprano and some instruments as a commissioned work. In 1999 he opened a "School for Music Theory (smt)" in Hünenberg , which later moved to Lucerne. In 2000 his composition Als would have been nothing (text: Max Huwyler) for five-part mixed choir and violoncello was performed in Lucerne and at the Expo.02 in Yverdon .

In 2002 the title of professor was conferred by the Swiss University Council. In 2003 anNähung for violin and horn was commissioned by the «Mozart Society Lucerne», in 2005 a concerto for euphonium, timpani and strings was commissioned by the Lucerne School of Music . In 2011 Podstransky ended his lectureship at the Conservatory, which had had the status of a music academy since 1999 and has since been absorbed into the music department of the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences. Since 2013 he has been giving lessons for music students again, including special, self-written teaching works when they start studying.
