Life

Hubert Rüther began an apprenticeship as a decorative painter in 1900 and from 1904 attended the royal drawing school in Dresden. Further years of training followed at the Dresden School of Applied Arts . From 1911 he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Dresden , where he was among other students at Oskar Zwintscher and 1914 master student at Gotthardt Kuehl . Rüther volunteered for service as a nurse in World War I and suffered a serious head injury. After the war he continued his artistic work in 1919 and worked in Otto Gussmann's master workshop .

In 1921 the Catholic Rüther married the Jew Irena Rabinowicz , who at that time was the first woman to be enrolled at the Dresden Art School. Brokered by the Dresden architect Robert Witte , he was commissioned with the redesign of the glass paintings of the Catholic parish church of Wittichenau . While the work on the windows in Wittichenau, which Rüther was carrying out in the Beier and Walther company in Dresden, the reprisals against Rüther and his wife began. Their art was considered degenerate by the National Socialists . Irena Rüther-Rabinowicz was arrested and committed to forced labor . Because Rüther refused to break up the so-called mixed marriage with a Jewish woman, he too was harassed and banned from working. In 1944, Rüther was also obliged to do forced labor in order to make his hands unusable for further artistic work.

Against the background of years of reprisals, Rüther, who suffered from a nervous problem, committed suicide on September 16, 1945. He was buried in the Loschwitz cemetery .
