Hubert Zenon Skrzypczak (born September 29, 1943 in Neustadt , West Prussia ) is a former Polish boxer . He was European flyweight champion in 1967 and winner of a bronze medal at the 1968 Olympic Games in light flyweight.

Career

Hubert Zenon Skrzypczak grew up in Wejherowo (Neustadt) and learned boxing at the boxing club WKS Gryf Wejherowo . Later he started for Zawisy Bydgoszcz and GKS Wybrzeże Gdańsk . As a teenager he learned the trade of a car mechanic. But he trained to become a sports teacher and later became a police officer.

In the sporting sector, he only appeared at the age of 22 when he reached the final of the Polish flyweight championship in 1965, but in this lost to Artur Olech on points. In the same year it was used at the European Championships in Berlin (East). In the flyweight he won there over Miroslav Moravec from Czechoslovakia , Wladimir Mironow from the Soviet Union and Constantin Ciucă from Romania . In the final battle he faced the German Hans Freistadt , to whom he delivered an even fight and only narrowly lost 2: 3 judges' votes. He became vice European champion .

In 1966 Hubert Skrzypczak was again Polish runner-up. In the final battle of the Polish championship he had to be taken out of the ring because of an injury against Artur Olech. In 1967 he took part in the European Championships in Rome for the second time. He was in excellent shape there and won the European title with four wins. He beat it in the semifinals of the Soviet champions Petr Gorbatow and in the final Constantin Ciucă on points.

Also in 1968 Hubert Skrzypczak did not succeed in winning the Polish championship, because that year he was defeated in the final Jerzy Wichman on points. The Polish head coach Feliks Stamm then decided that he had to start in the light flyweight division at the Olympic Games in Mexico . For him, who always had to work off a few kilos for the flyweight limit, this meant that he had to work off another 3 kilograms for the light flyweight. He managed this ordeal and won a medal in the difficult climatic conditions in Mexico. After three wins, he lost there in the semifinals against Jee Yong-ju from South Korea on points and won the bronze medal.

After another Polish runner-up in 1969, Hubert Skrzypczak was finally Polish flyweight champion in 1970 with a point win in the final over Jozef Witek. This remained his only title win, because in the final of the Polish championship in 1971 he was defeated by Leszek Błażyński and in 1973, the last Polish championship in which he participated, he was already defeated in the quarter-finals against Leszek Borkowski .

After the Olympic Games in 1968, Hubert Skrzypczak did not take part in other international championships. However, he still represented Poland in several international matches and also beat Hans Freistadt on points in Cologne in 1970 and thus returned the favor for the defeat at the European Championship in 1965.

In 1974 he ended his boxer career. He played a total of 243 fights, of which he won 208. He fought three times and lost 32 fights.

During his playing days, he was awarded the title of Honored Master of Sport .
