Hubert Waibel

Hubert Eugen Waibel (born November 6, 1922 in Wolfurt ; † June 15, 2014 there ) was an Austrian politician ( ÖVP ). From 1964 to 1984 he was a member of the Vorarlberg state parliament and from 1960 to 1985 mayor of Wolfurt.

education and profession

Waibel attended the Wolfurt elementary school from 1929 to 1937 and then graduated from the Lustenau commercial school from 1937 to 1939 . From 1939 to 1941 he worked as a commercial clerk in the office and in the field for a mill. He was employed by the Reich Labor Service from February to December 1941 and then served in World War II from December 1941. He became a prisoner of war and returned from American captivity in August 1945. His memories of the war were recorded in videos in 2007; Excerpts from these recordings have been available on youtube since 2018.

After the war, Waibel worked from November as an employee, accountant and department head at the textile company Franz Mäser in Dornbirn. From March 1960 he worked as a department head at Mohren Brewery in Dornbirn and was a professional politician from 1960 until his retirement in 1985.

Politics and functions

Waibel was mayor of his home community Wolfurt from May 1960, where he held the office until May 1985. In the same year he joined the Austrian People's Party and the ÖAAB and within the party was a member of the state party leadership from 1964 to 1984 and a member of the state party council of the ÖVP Vorarlberg from 1964 to 1969 . At the ÖAAB he was a member of the presidium and state board of the ÖAAB Vorarlberg from 1962 to 1985, and he was also a consultant for economic policy at the ÖAAB Vorarlberg. As a member of the constituency of Bregenz , he represented the ÖVP between October 29, 1964 and November 4, 1984, the ÖVP in the Vorarlberg state parliament, where he was also chairman of the legal committee from 1974 to 1984.

In addition to numerous other functions, Waibel was active as President of the Vorarlberg Association of Municipalities, President of the Austro-Soviet Society of Vorarlberg and Chairman of the Seniors' Advisory Council of Vorarlberg.

Private

Hubert Waibel was born in 1922 as the oldest of six children in his parents' house in Wolfurt. His father, Johann Waibel (1895–1948), worked as a commercial trader and was born in Dornbirn. His mother, Wilhelmine Waibel (1897–1988), née Müller, came from Wolfurt. Hubert Waibel married the secretary Ingeborg Jordan on July 12, 1954 and had five daughters between 1960 and 1969.
