Huernia macrocarpa is a plant from the subfamily of the asclepiadoideae (Asclepiadoideae). It is a very variable species.

features

Huernia macrocarpa forms stem succulent , upright or short lying and then upright shoots, which are usually compact and cluster-shaped. They are up to about 9 cm high, have a four- or five-ribbed cross-section and are up to 1.5 cm in diameter. The warts are smaller than 1 cm and pointed conical. They are approximately perpendicular to the stem axis. The flowers sit on short to about 1 cm long peduncles and point outwards or are slightly inclined downwards. The sepals measure 6–12 × 0.75–1.5 mm. The corolla has a diameter of about 1.5 to 2 cm and is bell-shaped. It is brownish-red to black-red or yellowish with purple-colored transverse bands. The inside of the petals is papillae. The crown lobes are triangular and 5 to 7 mm long. They stand upright or are slightly bent outwards. The secondary crown is black-brown to black-red. The interstaminal corolla lobes are transversely rectangular to square. The staminal corolla lobes are often light yellow at the base and become dark towards the apical end, usually dark to black-brown or black. The pollinium is yellowish, the fruits up to 17 cm long, with a diameter of up to 1 cm. They are often spread in pairs on a short, woody stem.

Geographical distribution

The species occurs in Sudan , Ethiopia , Eritrea , Saudi Arabia and Yemen .

Systematics and taxonomy

The species was first described by Achille Richard in 1851 as Stapelia macrocarpa . His type specimen came from Ethiopia. Since then the species has been described under a few other names, which are therefore synonyms:

  • Huernia penzigii N.E.Br.
  • Huernia arabica N.E.Br.
  • Huernia penzigii var. Schimperi A.Berger
  • Huernia penzigii var. Schweinfurthii A.Berger
  • Huernia macrocarpa var. Cerasina A.C. White & B.Sloane (nom. Inval.)
  • Huernia macrocarpa var flavicoronata A.C. White & B.Sloane (nom. Inval.)

Carl Ludwig Sprenger transferred the species to the genus Huernia in 1892 .

The following subspecies can be distinguished:

  • Huernia macrocarpa subsp. harerghensis M.G.Gilbert : only occurs in Ethiopia.
  • Huernia macrocarpa subsp. macrocarpa : It occurs from northeastern Sudan to Eritrea and on the southwestern Arabian Peninsula.
