The horseshoe is a right saalischer ridge in Jena plaice between the Tautenburger forest in the north and the Wöllmisse in the south.

location

As the shell limestone edge plate of the Thuringian Basin , most of its borders were created by the process of linear erosion. The Gleise valley is located in the north , the Gembdenbach valley in the south and the Middle Saale valley in the west . The transition to the Saale-Elster (Bunt) sandstone plate forms the eastern boundary. It is roughly the length of the village of Taupadel .

mountains

The horseshoe is a U-shaped landmark made of steeply rising mountain formations, which is most impressively perceived from the Saale valley. These elevations include from north to south the Feldherrenhügel, the Gleißberg with the Kunitzburg and the Jenzig . In a geological sense, the Schlossberg to the north and the Alte Gleisberg , the Kolben and the Dorlberg to the east are part of the ridge.

leisure

A 17 km long circular hiking trail leads over the western horseshoe and overcomes a total of 400 meters in altitude. The Jenzig mountain run is held annually, due to a difference in altitude of 235 m over a 4.75 km route, it should not be tackled without training.
